Eternal Forms: Greek Architecture Then and Now
The Doric order worked well for the Greeks. However, when the Greeks went to built a temple to the Goddess Diana, a female, it just didn't seem right using the proportions of a man. Because the Doric ratio was 6:1 it was bulky and masculine. It only seemed fitting that a more slender, feminine Order should be created for a temple to female gods such as Diana. So, a new Order was created that was based on the proportions of a woman.
