As we have seen, Suger's new way of constructing the walls of the church allowed
them to be much taller and to have windows. This completely changed the
emotional atmosphere one felt inside the church. When entering the
building, churchgoers almost automatically turned their faces upward. This
act symbolized the Medieval attitude that worship meant rejecting the
worldliness around oneself and contemplating spiritual things instead.
